Automotive wheel hub producer

Ontario, Canada

This high volume producer of automotive wheel hubs produced thousands of parts per day. At the same time they were experiencing an unacceptable level of scrap parts due to total runout in an op20 turning operation. The work piece had a short gripping diameter, making it difficult to establish the centerline from. The chuck used was an older sliding jaw chuck that was experiencing a substantial amount of “jaw lift” due to its age that only compounded the problem.

Solution: We recommended a more appropriate solution that offered pull back functionality to square the part up against the part flange (machined at same time as the gripping diameter). This not only corrected the total run-out problem, but also increased the rigidity of the entire part holding, leading to increased throughput gains and reduction in scrap.

ROI: Delivering a measurable ROI is critical to any productivity improvement project. We conduct an ROI analysis with all of our customers to make sure the investment makes sense. In this case a 3.5% reduction in scrapped parts saved $532 each week and via an increased throughput of 20% increased the gross profits by another $320 each week. So the solution paid for itself in less than 14 weeks and delivered a 3.7 times return on investment for the first year.
