What is the difference between “direct” and “indirect” chuck mounting?
Posted on September 1, 2010 in Ask ChuckWith a direct mount configuration, the adapter plate is first bolted to the back of the chuck to keep it from falling and being damaged. Then long bolts are inserted into the chuck face passing through the chuck body and chuck adapter, finally screwing into the spindle.
An indirect mount configuration has the user bolting the adapter plate to the spindle first and subsequently bolting the chuck to the chuck adapter (or passing through the chuck adapter and into the spindle).
Both mountings are equally appropriate.
